Diabetes is a disease that plagues thousands of Indians and millions of citizens across the globe every year. At present the statistics regarding diabetes are quite staggering – 1.5 million people die globally every year because of diabetes. 9% of adults around the globe have diabetes.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes Mellitus, commonly referred to as just Diabetes, is a chronic, metabolic disorder that causes excess blood sugar percentage for a prolonged period of time. Diabetes can never be cured completely, but its effects can be hugely negated by adhering to a strict diet of foods with low glycemic index and regular physical activity. In the most severe cases, insulin shots can be taken to maintain the blood sugar level, by preventing spikes in it, especially after meals.
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
You can self-diagnose high sugar levels in your bloodstream if you have the following symptoms – frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. People displaying signs of these symptoms should immediately consult a doctor or get their blood sugar levels checked at a diabetes center.
Why does diabetes happen?
After every meal, the carbohydrate in our food breaks down into sugar and is released to the bloodstream to be carried by the insulin produced by our pancreas, into the cells for absorption. Diabetes occurs when the insulin production of the pancreas has been hampered or the body is failing to absorb the sugar released in the blood. In extreme cases of high blood sugar, Diabetes services should be availed of, to lower blood sugar levels.
What are the types of diabetes?
Any diabetes clinic in Bangalore will tell you that Diabetes mellitus comes in three different types of affliction – Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational.
Type 1 Diabetes –This results when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, due to unknown causes. Type 1 Diabetes is just inherent in a person’s genes and cannot be prevented by any lifestyle or dietary changes.
Type 2 Diabetes – When our bodies gain too much weight, without proper exercise, they develop “insulin resistance” – where the cells in our body fail to respond to insulin properly. With the progress of the disease, insulin production may also be hampered.
Gestational Diabetes – When pregnant women develop diabetes, without having any previous history of high blood sugar.
Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes
People who have a history of diabetes in their intermediate family are always at higher risk of developing this disease. A healthy diet, sufficient in low GI foods and green vegetables, and plenty of physical exercise should help in preventing or delaying the impending diabetic disorder. Regular visits to Diabetes treatment centers will keep you abreast of the status of your body’s diabetic health.
People already diagnosed with diabetes should stick to a diet as below –
Eat high fiber, slow release carbs, like whole grains, brown rice or wild rice, sweet potatoes and yams, rolled oats
Eat colourful fruits and green leafy vegetables like apples, grapefruits, oranges, peaches, and green peas, carrots, parsnips.
Eat healthy fats from raw nuts, olive oil, fish, whole milk, avocados, etc
Exercise regularly. Ideally you should go for heavy cardio (like swimming, running, cycling, etc) to burn fat along with some weight lifting to build your muscles.
Avoid foods with high GI, like refined sugar, white bread and white rice, packaged and fast foods with high sodium content, trans fats from partially hydrogenated or deep-fried foods; saturated fats from junk food or processed meat
Avoid smoking and drinking. When coupled with a meal, they become even more harmful.
Don’t skip breakfast, eat a light dinner
Avoid eating sweets right after a meal
